An Exciting Night at Springport Motor Speedway
By: Chris Fobbe – Springport Motor Speedway

Springport, Michigan (8/17) – It was a picture perfect night as the cars and stars of the Springport Motor Speedway lined up for an action packed night of racing.

The first feature to hit the Speedway was the 25-lap feature for the Duck’s Point C-Store A Division. The A Division cars are the fastest of the bracket style ABC Stock Car Series. Kelli Jo Hofacker lead the field down for the start, and would hold the point for the opening handful of laps, but as the cars went down the backstretch, Hofacker left the inside line open coming off of the corner, allowing Jeremy Lutz to take advantage and take over the top spot. The race would be on from this point, as a great three-car battle between Lutz, Andrew Ritter and Joe Barnhart developed, with the three drivers slicing and dicing around the picturesque 3/8s (.375) mile oval. They would stay in tight formation until the fall of the checkered flag, with Lutz taking the win, Ritter was second with Barnhart, Mike Ammerman and Dane Long completing the top five.

Next up would be an action packed AP Motors B-Division 20-lap feature. Todd DeWaters would lead nearly half of the race from the pole position, but on lap nine it was Tom Coleman sneaking past. Coleman would hold the point for only a trio of laps, as he abruptly pulled down to the infield with mechanical issues ending his night. This would hand the lead over to a returning Jimmy Scavarda, who looked to be the car to beat, but as with Coleman, three laps later Scavarda abruptly slowed, a mechanical gremlin striking the Holt, Michigan pilot as well. This would hand things over to John Trudell, who would show some muscle as he went on to take the win. Craig Stephens would finish second with Patrick Kirkendall, DeWaters and Martin French completing the top five.

The C Division feature began with Dan Baschal leading the field down for the start, but it would be Robert Kerber shooting through the middle to claim the lead on lap one from the second row. Kerber would hold the point for a pair of laps, until Brandon Biddinger snuck past to take the top spot. Biddinger would show some muscle in the caution free event, as he went on to take his first feature win. Rich Kinch was second with Joe Biddinger, Kerber and Mark Langs Jr. completing the top five.

Joe Barnhart was the fastest of the ABC Stock Cars in qualifying, with a 16.440. Heat races were claimed by Joe Biddinger, Trudell, Lutz and Ritter.

The next feature of the evening was the Drive Train Specialists Modifieds, running 30 laps. 2004 Track Champion Jim Butler would lead the field down to the green, but it would quickly turn in to a thrilling three car battle between the veteran Butler and two relative new comers to Modifieds, in Mike Occhipinti and Chance Rice. The three drivers would have an aggressive battle around the high banks, but it would be Butler leading all 30 laps to take the win. Occhipinti was second, with Rice, Walt Obrinske Jr. and Earl Miles completing the top five. Heat races were won by Gord Alblas and Chance Rice with Nyle Weiler completing his qualifying lap the quickest with a 16.023. Earl Miles was the winner of the Four-car Dash.

The final feature of the evening was the Sport Stocks 20-lap feature, with a season high 19 cars checking in for the evenings events. Brad Robison would start off up front, but Aaron Taylor would charge from deep in the field to take the lead by the time the field returned to the line. It would be a two car race as Taylor and William Hartman worked their way through heavy lapped traffic. Taylor would navigate the traffic masterfully as he went on to take the win. Hartman was a close second with Mark Langs Jr., Steve Workman and Gary Martin completing the top five. Ryan Gordon, Troy Andrews and Aaron Taylor won the heat races, with Aaron Taylor also setting fast time with an 18.897.
