Occhipinti Nabs First Win at Springport
By: Chris Fobbe – Springport Motor Speedway

Springport, Michigan (8/31) – The drivers were out to put on a show at the Springport Motor Speedway. Aaron Taylor was dead set on showing that at the start of the Sport Stock feature event. As the field bogged down on the start, Taylor swung to the outside, and surged forward, taking the lead on the opening lap. Taylor would set a torrid pace around the 3/8s (.375) mile oval, as he claimed the win, his third straight. William Hartman was second with Ron Fizzell, Marq Eaton and Brad Robison completing the top five. Eaton and A. Taylor would claim heat race wins, while Hartman was the fastest in qualifying with a 19.178.

The second feature of the evening was the Drive Train Specialists Modifieds, running their 30-lap main event. Rookie competitor Mike Occhipint lead the field down to the green, surging into the lead from the first lap. Occhipinti would have Earl Miles right on his back bumper through the early runnings, but Occhipint held strong. Occhipinti would hold on to the point from wire to wire, claiming his first career feature win. Miles was second with Nyle Weiler, Dennis Uhlman and Walt Obrinske Jr. completing the top five. Miles and Jim Butler would take heat race wins, with Weiler setting fast time with a 16.030.

The Duck’s Point C-Store A-Division Feature would hit the Speedway next, for 25 laps. John Trudell would lead the field down on the start, but it would be Amber Slagle snaking the lead away on lap four. Slagle would quickly have a tough challenge from Jeremy Lutz. Lutz and Slagle would race side by side for several laps, until finally on lap 14 Lutz was able to complete the pass. Lutz would take the win, and pull into victory lane, flames underneath the hood. Joe Barnhart was second with Slagle, Andrew Ritter and Trudell completing the top five.

The AP Motors B-Division feature would be another action packed affair. Scott Booth lead the field down for the start, but it would be Joe Biddinger leading the opening lap. Biddinger and Randy Riever exchanged the lead back and forth, before Jimmy Scavarda was able to drive past into the lead, after Riever broke, causing a restart. Scavarda would unfortunately be flagged for going too far underneath his designated qualifying time, putting him the last car on the lead lap. This would put Joe Biddinger into the top spot, where he would remain for the rest of the event. Brian Nobel was second with Martin French, Todd DeWaters and Scott Booth finishing the top five.

The final feature of the evening was the C-Division feature, Rich Deskins bringing the field to the starting line. His lead would be short-lived, however, as rookie driver Taz Weakley took over the top spot. Weakley and Gary Martin would trade off the lead a few times, before Mark Langs Jr. worked his way into position to sneak past Weakley for the top spot on lap five. Langs would not be denied as he went on to claim the win. Martin was second with Weakley, Don Followell, and Deskins finishing off the top five.

Heat race wins for the ABC Stock Cars were won by Sabrina Booth, DeWaters, Trudell and Ritter. Joe Barnhart was the fastest qualifier with a 16.382.
