Taylor, Massuch, Long, Trudell and Kinch Win Big at Springport

By: Chris Fobbe – Springport Motor Speedway

Springport, Michigan (7/13) – On a hot summer day, five big feature events were on the docket for the fans of Michigan’s most scenic speedway.

The first feature event of the evening to hit the 3/8s (.375) mile high banked oval were the Sport Stocks. The drivers ran wire to wire caution free, but the competition was tight, as Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame Driver Dutch Taylor snatched the lead on lap one. Dutch would see plenty of trouble as his grandson Aaron Taylor searched all over the Speedway trying to find the grip he needed to get by, but it was old age and treachery winning out, as Dutch Taylor took the win. Aaron was second with Gary Martin completing the podium positions. Dutch was also able to grab the heat race, while Aaron Taylor was fastest qualifier, with a 19.241 around the Speedway.

The next feature of the evening was the 30-lap Performance Automotive Northwest Super Late Models. Steve Dolphin, making his first appearance of the 2013 campaign lead the star studded field down to chief starter Tim Beebe’s green flag. Dolphin would be overtaken on the first lap by another first-time visitor, Dave Simpson, who would pace the field for the opening five laps, before succumbing to Three-Time Track Champion Brian Huntley. Huntley seemed to have the race well in hand, but a caution flag bunched the field back up, and what looked like a bit of a push off of the second corner opened the door for Phil Massuch to slip past and take the lead. Massuch would see a late race charge from Dan Krzywosinski, but it would end with Massuch crossing the line first, with Krzywosinski in hot pursuit. Lakeland, Florida veteran Steve Dorer was third, with Huntley and Dave Stehouwer completing the top five. Dolphin and Stehouwer claimed heat race wins with Massuch setting fast time with a 15.484.

To complete the evening would be a trio of features for the Duck’s Point C-Store / AP Motors ABC Stock Car Series. The A-Division would be up first running a 25-lap main event. Springport native Cody Eglon lead the field down to the green, but it was Multi-time Spartan Speedway Champion Dane Long was able to snatch the lead away on the initial circuit. Over the duration of the 25-laps, Long would see several attempts at taking his lead away, but it was not to be, as he claimed his first win of the season. Joe Barnhart was second with Justin Dinzik, Andrew Ritter and Two-Time Track Champion Mike Ammerman completing the top five.

The AP Motors B-Division 20-lap main event was another excitement filled event, as Craig Stephens lead the field down on the start. Stephens would hold station up front for just beyond the ¼ point of the race, before surrendering the lead the John Trudell. Trudell was able to hold steady up front for the last caution free portion of the event, as he went on to take the win. Second was Jordan Harvey with Todd DeWaters, Stephens and Terry Whitney completing the top handful of drivers.

The final feature of the evening was the C-Division feature. Defending Track Champion Sabrina Booth set the pace down to the line, but it was Robert Kerber taking command on lap one. Kerber would handle the opening five laps, but it would be Parma, Michigan driver Quinten Bethke taking command. Bethke would hold steady until a caution flag with two laps to go bunched the field right up for a green-white-checkered finish. As the field came back around to get the one lap to go signal, Rich Kinch has overtaken Bethke. The Veteran driver would hold on to take the win. Jerry Schroll was second with Bethke, Brandon Biddinger and Kerber completing the top five.

Andrew Ritter was the winner of the Duck’s Point C-Store Four Car dash, with Mark Langs, Long, and Tom Coleman claiming heat race wins. Fast qualifier for theABC division was Joe Barnhart with a 16.578.
