Intense Racing Actions Excites at Springport
By: Chris Fobbe – Springport Motor Speedway

Springport, Michigan (5/10) – A strong field of talented drivers lined up for a great night of racing at the picturesque 3/8s (.375) mile high banked oval. The first feature to hit the track was the Kitsmiller RV Super Late Models. John Kulikowski would lead the field down to the green flag, but it would be veteran campaigner Tim Rugg holding the point for the initial handful of laps. Tim Ryan, making his first appearance in quite a while would overtake Rugg, and looked to be cruising towards victory, but a caution would allow for the field to close up on Ryan’s back bumper. Ryan would hold steady in his lead until the very last lap. Coming off of turn two, the Flushing, Michigan driver would bobble, allowing for three-time Track Champion Brian Huntley to dive inside of him into turn three. The two veterans would drag race down to the line, but it would be Huntley winning by a nose. Ryan was second with Tyler Hufford, Dave Stehouwer and Rugg completing the top five. Kulikowski and Hufford were heat race winners with Huntley setting the mark in qualifying with a 15.345.

The next feature to make their way on to the track was the Sport Stocks going 12-laps/ Wayne Parkhurst would start things off up front, but it would be Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame driver Dutch Taylor taking command on lap one. Taylor would hold the point, but it would be last week’s feature winner Rick Peck trying to get around. Peck would use every single weapon in his arsenal to try and get by the crafty veteran. Peck would come close, but it was not to be as Taylor took the win. Peck was a very close second with Brad Robison and Parkhurst completing the top four. Peck took the heat race win and claimed fast qualifier honors with an 18.828.

The AP Motors A-Division would be next up, running an action filled feature event. Defending Track Champion Joe Barnhart would start things off up front and would be dominant from open to close. While there would be occasional challenges, the reigning track Champion would go on to claim his second consecutive feature win. Jeff Lonsberry would come home second with Justin Eidenier, John Trudell and Don Bergau completing the top five.

The Duck’s Point C-Store B-Division would close things out for the evening, and they put on a whale of a show. Jerry Schroll would start things off out in front, but Robert Kerber would take command off of the start. It would be a four car break away out in front, with Kerber trying to hold off Bryan Noble and Tanner Tallarico while Mike Havens waited in the wings. These drivers would battle thing out for numerous laps until Kerber slipped in turn four thanks to fluid on the racing surface. This would hand things over to Tanner Tallarico who was running second when the caution flew. Tallarico, who had brought the car out for the first time since last season’s Michigan Cup weekend would make it count as he took the big win. Havens was second with Kerber, B. Noble and Schroll completing the top five.

Barnhart was the fastest qualifier in the ABC Stock Cars, turning in a 16.123. Heat races were claimed by B. Noble and Barnhart.
