Bike Night A Huge Success At Springport
By: Chris Fobbe – Springport Motor Speedway
Springport, Michigan (5/25) – On a cool Saturday evening, fans lined up for Bike Night at the Springport Motor Speedway. Thanks to generous donations from several local businesses and the drivers and teams at the Speedway, 30 bikes were given away to the younger race fans, making for a great experience for all involved.
The first feature of the evening would be the 30-lap Drive Train Specialists Modifieds main event. Brian Roes would lead the field down to the green flag, but it would be five time and defending Track Champion Earl Miles sneaking by to take the lead on lap number one. Miles would look to be on a cruise, until 1998 Champion Nyle Weiler caught his back bumper. The two drivers would slice and dice around the 3/8s (.375) mile oval, but at the end of the night, it would be Weiler sneaking by and taking the win. Miles was second with Steve Rollins, Justin Kazmar and Roes rounding out the top five. Walt Obrinske Jr. and Miles took the heat race wins, while David Winans was quick qualifier with a 16.032.
Next on the track would be the 25-lap Ducks Point C-Store A-Division feature. Last week’s AP Motors B-Division winner Tom Dumbald Jr. would line up on the front row. Dumbald would hold the point for the opening four laps, until a blown motor sent the car careening into the turn three wall. Dumbald was okay, but would not be able to continue on. Cody Eglon would inherit the lead, but it would be opening night feature winner Joe Barnhart taking the lead on lap six, despite heavy cosmetic damage. Barnhart would continue to hold the point, as he went on to take his second feature win of the season. Andrew Ritter was second, with Justin Stephens, JD Hancock and Earl Miles completing the top five.
The AP Motors B-Division feature would line up next for their feature event. Todd DeWaters would lead the field down to chief starter Tim Beebe’s green flag, but it would be Phil Black putting the moves on to get into the lead by the next circuit. Tom Coleman would slip by as well, and began to stalk the Black machine around the Speedway. Black would develop a push heading into turn three, and it would be all she wrote, as Tom Coleman jumped into the lead and would hold on for the completion of the event. DeWaters was second with Black and John Trudell completing the lineup.
The C-Division feature would be next up on the track for their 15-lap main event. Dan Gokee would be the polesitter, but it would be Steven Pelky swinging around the outside to lead the opening lap. Pelky would lead a pair of circuits, before 2011 B-Division Champion Robert Kerber got by to take the lead. In an action filled event, Kerber would also have a short lived lead as Mark Langs drove by going down the backstretch to lead lap four. Langs would set a torrid pace as he ran down the laps, going on to take the feature win, in addition to winning his heat and dash!Kerber was second with Sabrina Booth, Jerry Schroll and Pelky completing the top five.
ABC Heat races were claimed by Langs, Trudell and Barnhart, while Langs also won the Dash. Fast qualifier was Don Bergau with a 16.334.
The final event of the evening was the Sport Stock feature event. Brad Robison started things off up front, but it would be last week’s feature winner Greg Pinard. Pinard would hold the point as Richard Peck, who was won the feature one week ago on the dirt at the I-96 Speedway, was looking to show that track surface had no bearing on his success. Pinard and Peck would duke it out, before Peck got the point. Peck would go on to take the win, his first ever on pavement. Aaron Taylor would finish second with Pinard, Johnny Ridley and Gary Martin rounding out the top five. Robison and Taylor won the heats, with Peck setting fast time with a 19.326.
